About Budesonide and Formoterol Fumarate

The active ingredients budesonide and formoterol fumarate, is used in medications to prevent asthma attacks. They work by blocking the release of inflammatory causing chemicals in the body (budesonide) and relaxing the muscles airways in the lungs to improve breathing. Budesonide and formoterol fumarate do not stop an asthma attack that has already started. This medication should not be used for treating an asthma attack. Asthma attacks require a rapid onset asthma medication.

Medications containing budesonide and formoterol fumarate are sold under various brand names such as Fomtide, Foracort, Pulmicort, and Symbicort.
Budesonide and formoterol fumarate is available in several forms and dosage strengths. Cipla, India manufactures rotacaps in the following strengths - 12 mcg + 400 mcg, 400 mcg + 6 mcg, 100 mcg + 6 mcg, and 200 mcg + 6 mcg. Sun Pharma, India has Fomtide Disk 8 Blister packs.

Budesonide and formoterol fumarate can also be prescribed to treat COPD and other medical conditions.

How to use

Take this medication as prescribed by your physician, Do not start, stop, or change the dosage without your physician's approval.
To reduce the risk of developing an oral yeast infection, rinse your mouth with water.
Store your medication and inhaler in a cool and dry place. Do not expose to high temperatures. Inhalers can explode under these conditions.

Warnings and Precautions

Before taking any medication, it is important to consult with your physician. Provide your physician with a complete list of the medications you take, including prescription, over-the-counter (OTC) medications, vitamins, herbal remedies and supplements. Certain medical conditions and drugs can have an adverse reaction when combined with budesonide and formoterol fumarate.

Follow your physician's instructions for taking this medications.
Do not take this medication, without your physician's approval if you:

  • are allergic to budesonide and formoterol fumarate or any of its ingredients
  • have glaucoma
  • have diabetes

This medication will not stop an asthma attack; it is intended for the prevention of asthma attacks.

To reduce the risk of developing an oral yeast infection, rinse your mouth with water.
Avoid contact with eyes, if any gets in the eyes, rinse with water immediately because it may cause damage to the eyes.

Steroidal drugs should not be used for a prolonged amount of time; steroid drugs may weaken your immune system. Avoid contact with people who have communicable diseases.
Budesonide and formoterol fumarate is not recommended for use by children less than 4 years of age, unless prescribed by the child's physician. Steroids may effect a child's growth. Monitor your child for any abnormality in his/her growth. If you notice any abnormalities report them to your child's physician.

Do not suddenly stop using an oral steroidal medication it may cause unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. Ask your physician for advice about slowly dropping the dosage of oral steroid.
Extended use of steroids can cause bone loss. The chance of developing osteoporosis is increased for people who smoke, do not get regular exercise, have a vitamin D or calcium deficiency, or who have a family history of osteoporosis.  Talk to your physician about your risk for osteoporosis.
Prolonged steroid use can also cause:

  • bruising easily
  • changes in fat deposition in the body
  • facial hair
  • impotence
  • increased acne
  • loss of sex drive
  • menstrual disorders
  • thinning skin

If you forget to take dose, take it as soon as you remember; if it is almost time for your next dose wait until that dose. Do not take an extra dose to make up for the missed dose.
If you take an accidental overdose, get immediate medical attention. Symptoms of an overdose include

  • angina
  • chest pain
  • headache
  • irregular heartbeat
  • nausea
  • seizures
  • shaking
  • vomiting
  • weakness

Keep all medications out of the reach of children and pets.

Drug Interactions

Certain medications can have a drug interaction with budesonide and formoterol fumarate. It is important that you do not take them with budesonide and formoterol fumarate. Do not take budesonide and formoterol fumarate if you take:

  • amiodarone
  • atazanvir
  • beta blockers
  • desipramine
  • diuretics
  • fluoxetine
  • imipramine
  • indinavir
  • itraconazole
  • ketoconazole
  • MAO inhibitors
  • ritonavir

Possible Side Effects

Common side effects include:
