What is Duolin?

Duolin is an inhaled medication used to treat bronchospasm in patients with COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The active ingredients are levosalbutamol and ipratropium bromide. Duolin treats COPD by relaxing the muscles of the blood vessels in the lungs allowing an increased flow of blood which opens the air passages and makes breathing easier.

The active ingredients (levosalbutamol and ipratropium bromide) are manufactured and marketed under several brand names including Duolin (Cipla) and Combivent (Boehringer Ingelheim, Brazil).
Duolin pharmaceutical forms are respules, rotacaps, and inhalers, Duolin is available in varying dosage strengths and package sizes.

How to Use Duolin

Follow your doctor's instructions for using this medication. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of your medications without the approval of your doctor. Starting, stopping or changing dosage can cause serious adverse side effects.

If you accidently take an overdose, get immediate medical attention. An overdose can be fatal.
You should keep COPD medications close at hand at all times in case of an emergency.

Precautions and Warnings

Before using this Duolin it is important to consult with your doctor to determine if it is the proper medication for your conditions. Your doctor will ask you to take a complete physical exam and will need to know your complete medical history and all of the medications you take, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal remedies, supplements, and vitamins. Keep your inhaler clean and dry to avoid contamination of your medication. Use a dry tissue to clean and dry your inhaler after every use.
If you notice Duolin does not control your asthma or isn't working as well as it did, tell your doctor as soon as possible. He or she may decide to change your dosage or medication. When asthma symptoms don't seem to be responding as is expected with your medication, it may be a sign of a pending serious asthma attack.

Certain medical condition require that you inform your doctor to avoid an adverse reaction, these conditions include:

  • coronary artery disease
  • arrhythmia
  • hyperthyroidism
  • high blood pressure
  • heart disease
  • glaucoma
  • enlarged prostate
  • diabetes
  • urination problems
  • seizures
  • kidney or liver disease

If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant consult with your doctor before taking Duolin, it is not know if Duolin will harm the unborn baby. If you are breast feeding, consult your doctor as it is not known if the ingredients in Duolin will pass through breast milk to the baby.

Keep your asthma medication on hand at all times.
If you forget to take a dose and it is not close to the time of the next dose take it immediately. If it is almost time for the next dose skip the missed one and wait to take the next scheduled dose. Do not take an extra dose to make up for the missed one. If you accidently take an overdose, get immediate medical attention. An overdose can be fatal.

Symptoms of an overdose include:

  • chest pain
  • excessive thirst
  • fainting
  • fast or pounding heartbeat
  • muscle weakness
  • respiratory arrest
  • tinnitus
  • severe headache
  • shallow breathing
  • weak pulse

Duolin should be stored in a cool dry location. Keep Duolin and all medications out of the reach of children and pets.

Possible Drug Interactions

Certain medications may interact with the active ingredients in Duolin. Inform your doctor of the medications you are taking. Especially if you take any of the following types of medications:

  • anti-depressants
  • beta blockers
  • diuretics
  • MAO inhibitors
  • other bronchodilators

Serious side effects associated with levosalbutamol and ipratropium bromide include:

  • brochospasm that gets worse
  • chest pain
