What is Combivent?

Combivent is an inhaler with metered-doses. Combivent is a combination of the active ingredients salbutamol sulphate and ipratorium bromide sulphate. Salbutamol sulphate and ipratorium bromide sulphate in Combivent are bronchodilators that relax muscles in the air passages to increase air flow to the lungs. Combivent is often prescribed along with other medications, principally it is used as an inhaled medicine to prevent bronchospasm in people with COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease).

Combivent may also be used for other conditions not listed here.
Salbutamol sulphate and ipratorium bromide are sold under various brand names in various strengths.
Combivent is manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim in 20mcg + 100 mcg dose inhaler.

How to Use Combivent

It is important to use the Combivent inhaler exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not change your dosage without your doctor's approval. Do not start or stop or change the dosage of your medication without consulting with your doctor. Combivent may increase the risk of an asthma related death.

Always have Combivent and other asthma medications available at all times.
Do not take Combivent past the time prescribed or past the expiration date. Do not exceed the prescribed daily dose. If you accidently take an overdose of Combivent, seek immediate medical attention.
To avoid contamination of your medication, keep your inhaler clean and dry. Use a dry tissue to clean and dry the inhaler.

Precautions and Warnings

Before taking Combivent it is important to discuss your medical history and what medications you use with your doctor. The reason it is important to tell your doctor what medications you take is to avoid a possible serious adverse drug reaction. Be prepared to provide your doctor with a list of all the prescription and over-the-counter medications, herbal remedies, vitamin, and supplements you take. Certain medical conditions may prevent the use of some medications to treat asthma, COPD, and other pulmonary disorders.

Combivent may raise the risk of death related to asthma.
Do not use Combivent if you are allergic to salbuamol sulphate and ipratorium bromide or any of their ingredients.

Do not use Combivent if you have food allergies such as peanuts, soy, and soybeans, or allergies to foods that contain soy lecithin. Combivent and other asthma medications should be kept nearby at all times.
Some serious medical condition must be reported to your doctor, these conditions include:

  • arrhythmia
  • coronary artery disease
  • diabetes
  • enlarged prostate
  • glaucoma
  • heart disease
  • high blood pressure
  • hyperthyroidism
  • kidney disease
  • liver disease
  • seizures
  • urination problems

If you forget to take a dose and it is not close to the time of the next dose take it immediately. If it is almost time for the next dose skip the missed one and wait to take the next scheduled dose. Do not take an extra dose to make up for the missed one. If you accidently take an overdose of Combivent, get medical attention immediately. An overdose of salbuamol sulphate and ipratorium bromide can be fatal.
Symptoms of an overdose include:

  • chest pain
  • excessive thirst
  • fainting
  • fast or pounding heartbeat
  • weak pulse
  • shallow breathing or stopped breathing
  • severe headache
  • ringing in the ears
  • muscle weakness

Use Combivent only as prescribed by your doctor. Do not start, stop, or change your dosage without consulting with your doctor. Do not share your prescription with anyone else, even if their symptoms are the same as yours.

Consult with your doctor about the safety of using Combivent if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breast feeding. It is classified as a category C drug which means it is not known to cause harm to an unborn baby. It is also not know if the medication passes through breast milk. Your doctor will determine if Combivent is the right medication for you to take while pregnant or breast feeding.

When using Combivent, it is important you follow your doctor's instructions regarding exercise and diet.

Possible Side Effects

The use of Combivent may result in serious side effects. It is important that you are aware of all possible side effects, both serious and common.
Common side effects include:

  • stuffy nose
  • sore throat
  • runny nose
  • muscle aches
  • insomnia
  • cough
  • diarrhea
  • dizziness
  • headaches
  • hoarse voice

The common side effects are generally temporary. If you experience a common side effect that continues or gets worse contact your doctor immediately.
Serious side effects which require immediate medical attention include:

  • brochospasm that gets worse
  • chest pain
  • wheezing
  • confusion
  • dangerously high blood pressure
  • pounding heart beat
  • painful or difficulty urinating
  • nervousness
  • muscle weakness
  • leg discomfort
  • irregular heart beat
  • increased urination
  • trembling
  • vision changes
  • excessive thirst

If you experience any of these serious side effects, get immediate medical attention. Combivent may raise the risk of death related to asthma.
